This week, I had a meeting with one of our customers. They had 14 sites installed, and we were discussing the options for consolidating their other divisions to run on the same systems - removing the need to manage 3 other ERP platforms.

Part of the conversation was around technology infrastructure which for us is very Microsoft centric. During the conversations, Linux was bought up, which has always been a red flag for me, because in the past I have realized that there are either Linux (Open source) or Microsoft (Monopoly) disciples. Waging a Microsoft crusade against Linux evangelists is a loosing battle. Then he said something both funny and insightful that gave me hope:

"I'm not a fan of Elton John, but I do like all of his songs"

People love to rebel against the constraints (Reactance - #4 of the Top 10 Common Faults In Human Thought http://bit.ly/70qj2G) and Microsoft are a great target. But you have to be realistic. Microsoft have a large footprint within most ofrganizations, and they have a lot of great applications that you use regardless of if you like it or not - i.e. Active Directory, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, MS SQL Server.

Deep down in your IT soul, regardless if you are not a Microsoft fan, you still like to use their software...

Re: No one likes to admit that they are a fan of Elton John or Microsoft

Wow, that explains a lot :) I've often wondered about this rabid Microsoft-bashing, the vehemence of it - when I don't see any massive suffering caused by them either.

Thanks for the link on the top 10 faults in human thought - very interesting! Explains a lot of mistakes we tend to make.

Pareidolia - especially, will come of use in arguments, people are always reading meanings into harmless things, cursing poor black cats etc :)

Though I guess the "Show me a sign, O Lord!" desire is based on wanting a confirmation that someone up there is actually looking after us and saving us from ourselves.

"Be Rational, Be Alone". Pareidolia has its uses, other than in ink blot tests :)
